Google made a huge splash during its Made by Google 2024 event by introducing the Pixel 9 Pro Fold alongside a full refresh for the Pixel 9 line. This new foldable device is the second take on the category for Google, following the success of its first foldable, the Pixel Fold. The company decided to change its numbering scheme, now naming the device Pixel 9 Pro Fold to align it with the rest of Google’s mobile portfolio.
One of the key improvements on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is the increase in the display size. The internal display has been expanded to a full 8-inch screen when opened flat, making it one of the largest displays on a foldable device. Additionally, the outer display has also been enlarged from 5.8 to 6.3 inches, enhancing the overall user experience. The device boasts an impressive 2076 x 2152 OLED display with a 120 Hz refresh rate and a brightness of 2,700 nits. Moreover, the handset is now thinner than its predecessor, measuring 0.4 inches folded and 0.2 inches when open.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is powered by Google’s new Tensor G4 chip, offering seamless performance and efficiency. It comes with 16GB of RAM and storage options of either 256GB or 512GB. The device also features a revamped camera system, including a 48-megapixel wide lens, a 10.5-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 10.8-megapixel telephoto lens capable of 5x optical zoom. One of the most significant upgrades is the addition of Gemini as the default smart assistant, providing users with an enhanced AI experience.
Google has integrated several software features into the Pixel 9 Pro Fold to enrich the user experience. The device will come with a year of Google One AI Premium, which includes Gemini Advanced and Gemini in Gmail and Docs, along with 2TB of Google Cloud storage. Moreover, customers can enjoy seven years of guaranteed OS and security updates, as well as new features through Pixel Drops. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold will be available in select countries, including the U.S., Canada, Australia, India, Japan, and several European nations, with a scheduled release date of September 4.
