The Innovations and Limitations of Samyang’s Remaster Slim Autofocus Lens

Samyang has introduced a new prime lens that aims to simplify the photography experience by allowing photographers to change focal lengths by swapping out optical elements within the lens. This innovative approach is designed to reduce the need to carry multiple lenses, making it more convenient for photographers on the go.

One of the main advantages of prime lenses, such as the Remaster Slim, is their simpler design which typically results in sharper images and a shallower depth of field. These characteristics can significantly enhance the quality of photographs, providing photographers with more creative options for capturing stunning images.

The Remaster Slim autofocus lens boasts a compact design, measuring just 0.8 inches thick. The optical elements are housed in a smaller magnetic mount that can be easily swapped in and out from the center of the lens. This design allows for quick and hassle-free changes to the focal length without the need for multiple lenses.

Initially, Samyang is offering three different inserts for the Remaster Slim lens: a wider 21mm f/2.8, a 28mm f/3.5, and a 32mm f/3.5 more suitable for closer portrait photography. These inserts provide photographers with versatile options for capturing a variety of subjects without the need for carrying multiple prime lenses.

While the Remaster Slim lens offers innovative features, there may be some tradeoffs to consider. Samyang emphasizes the lens’s “analog sensibility” and draws inspiration from vintage film cameras. This could suggest that the lens may produce softer results compared to other prime lenses with faster maximum apertures. Photographers may need to consider their preference for sharpness versus a more nostalgic aesthetic.

It’s important to note that the Remaster Slim lens is only compatible with Sony’s E-mount lens system. The lens was available for preorder in South Korea at a price of 308,000 won, roughly equivalent to $229 USD. Shipping is set to begin in early September, with wider availability expected in South Korea by early October. However, availability for other markets has not yet been announced.

Samyang’s Remaster Slim autofocus lens offers a unique approach to changing focal lengths and simplifying the photography process. While it may have some limitations compared to traditional prime lenses, its innovative design and convenience make it a compelling option for photographers looking to streamline their gear.
