Meta Reveals Plans for Third-Party Chats in WhatsApp and Messenger

This move, primarily targeting users in the European Union, brings about innovative options for blending Messenger and WhatsApp conversations with external chat services. Additionally, Meta will introduce enhanced notification mechanisms in Messenger and WhatsApp to alert users about the possibility of linking their chats with supported third-party applications.

According to Meta, the company has exceeded the basic requirements for interoperable messaging by offering a range of advanced features for users. These include functionalities such as reactions, direct replies, typing indicators, and read receipts. Moreover, Meta intends to enable the creation of group chats involving individuals from third-party platforms starting next year, enhancing the collaborative potential of its messaging services.

While the current focus lies on integrating third-party chats into WhatsApp and Messenger, Meta has outlined its ambitious plans for extending interoperability to video and voice calls by the year 2027. This strategic expansion aims to offer a comprehensive communication experience to users, encompassing various forms of interaction within a unified digital environment.

As Meta strives to navigate the regulatory landscape in the EU, it faces the classification of being a “digital gatekeeper” under the Digital Markets Act. One of the major hurdles involves the requirement for third-party apps to adhere to the Signal Protocol for maintaining message confidentiality, as specified in the partnership agreement stipulated by Meta.
