The Danger of Unauthorized Internet Access in the US Navy

Restricted internet access can be a hassle in many situations, but especially so in high-security environments such as the US Navy. It is expected that strict rules and regulations would be in place to govern the use of internet on board naval ships, especially when on sensitive missions in foreign waters. However, a recent incident involving the USS Manchester has shed light on the lengths some individuals are willing to go to bypass these restrictions.

The USS Manchester, a $500 million warship, saw senior crew members taking matters into their own hands when it came to internet access. Instead of abiding by the Navy’s rules, they reportedly purchased a Starlink connection for $2,800, mounted it on a pallet, and attached it to the exterior of the ship. This unauthorized setup allowed them to bypass the Navy-monitored connection and have unrestricted access to the internet while deployed in the West Pacific.

The Discovery

The cunning scheme was eventually uncovered when sailors on board noticed a peculiar WiFi network named “STINKY” appearing in their connection options. This name, believed to be a default setting for Starlink connections, raised suspicions among the crew. Despite attempts to conceal the network by renaming it to look like a wireless printer, the truth eventually came to light when an authorised worker came across the unauthorized Starlink dish while installing an approved Space X “Starshield” device.

The repercussions of this unauthorized internet setup were severe. Command Senior Chief Grisel Marrero, along with other senior staff involved in the scheme, faced disciplinary action. Marrero pled guilty during a court martial and was relieved of her position. All individuals who used, paid for, or were aware of the unauthorized system received administrative non-judicial punishment at the commodore’s mast.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of disregarding regulations in high-security environments. Unauthorized actions, such as installing a personal internet connection on US Navy property, can have serious implications and result in severe disciplinary measures. Moreover, it highlights the importance of maintaining the integrity of security protocols and following established procedures to prevent unauthorized access.

The case of the unauthorized Starlink connection on the USS Manchester is a cautionary tale of the risks associated with circumventing official channels in restricted environments. The incident not only resulted in the downfall of a Navy officer’s career but also exposed the vulnerabilities that can arise from unchecked actions. It emphasizes the need for vigilance and adherence to protocols to ensure the security and integrity of operations within the US Navy.
