On Wednesday, YouTube made an exciting announcement at their “Made on YouTube” event, unveiling a unique feature designed to enhance interaction between creators and their audiences. Titled “Communities,” this new space serves as a streamlined platform for creators to cultivate relationships with their fans directly on their channels. Unlike existing discussion platforms such as Discord or Reddit, Communities aims to centralize these interactions, allowing creators to engage with followers without the need to redirect them to external sites.

Previously, viewers were confined to commenting on videos as a primary means of engaging with creators. The introduction of Communities transforms this dynamic, empowering fans to share their own content, like photos or videos, fostering a sense of community around shared interests. For example, imagine a fitness creator whose fans can post images of their latest adventures or workouts within the Community. This structure not only nurtures creativity among fans but also cultivates a richer dialogue around the content that viewers are passionate about.

Bangaly Kaba, YouTube’s director of product management, articulated the vision behind Communities, emphasizing the desire for viewers to find a collective belonging. He stated that this new feature is intended to provide a space where meaningful connections can grow—not just through updates or requests for feedback from creators but through organic discussions initiated by subscribers themselves. Importantly, Communities should not be confused with YouTube’s existing Community feature, which has been limited to one-way communication since its debut in 2016 and does not allow viewer interaction.

Currently in testing phases on mobile devices with a select group of creators, Communities is poised to expand later this year. YouTube’s ambition is to roll out this feature more broadly to various channels by early 2025. By doing so, the platform aims to enrich the creator-viewer relationship further, heralding a future where interactions are more meaningful and inclusive.
